Sculpture
I do a lot of found-object stuff. Nowadays it’s brought-object stuff. People bring me things they think could end up in my sculpture, and I appreciate these items.
If I have any inspirational influences they might be Louise Nevelson, Lee Bontecou, John Chamberlain, Deborah Butterfield. Some early brutalists and dada folks. And, folk artists. Folk art is, to me, the truest, most spontaneous art, unfettered by art-historical notions of beauty and mastery. I find folk art, tramp art, trench art and primitive bayou art fascinating.”
A Dallas art magazine called me a cross between Rube Goldberg and John Chamberlain. I like that a lot.
I employ Duchamp’s aesthetic osmosis, or shared enterprise, whereby the artist shifts responsibility for finding meaning to the viewer. It’s more fun for us that way, don’t you think? We all bring something to it.
